In 1941 the British people had their backs to the wall in their lone fight against the might of Hitler's Germany. America was neutral, at least until the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Glasgow became the starting point for one of the most amazing episodes of the war. Government officials desperate for men to sail merchant ships across the Atlantic to collect vital equipment and supplies from North America devised a plan to enlist convicts from Barlinnie Prison and use them as crew for a 25,000-ton merchantman, the GEORGE WASHINGTON. This unprecedented and dangerous operation was probably the nearest thing to press gang tactics since the days of Lord Nelson. Quite simply a choice of death or glory, this book relates the extraordinary story of these men through the accounts of two survivors, plus the log and memories of Captain David Bone and Glasgow police records and documents. : About the Author: A former newspaper reporter, magazine editor and publishing executive, Peter Haining was best known as a prolific author and editor, having contributed to more than 170 publications in his lifetime. He wrote both fiction and non-fiction, with a strong focus on horror and fantasy, but also on a variety of subjects from the Second World War to Doctor Who. Peter passed away in 2007.

I bought this book because I am an avid Jane Austen Fan and the title intrigued me. Even though I was not entirely expecting a self help book to dating, which was naive of me, I have to say that I am thoroughly enjoying this book. Each chapter is a lesson learned from Jane Austen, it offers to examples from the book and then proceeds to give a summary of what should have been learned based on the characters experiences. She compliments these with real experiences from people she has met.
The advice it offers is practical and at times I wonder why I did not think on it before. The advice it offers is taken straight out of Jane Austen's novels but supported with real life experiences which makes it all the more entertaining and educational. The advice it offers is simple and down to earth, it does not involve any complicated games of jealousy or an intricate web of anything else. If you are on the hunt for a dating book, I highly recommend this one. Trust me, it is worth it!

I enjoyed the book. I was surprised how our modern-day language has, apparently, been dumbed down over the years. I'm college-educated, but found many words she used to be ones I had never heard. That said, I still enjoyed the book. I probably should have read it years ago in some English class, but it was never required. I took my time with no looming deadlines and enjoyed it.

Author of such torrid titles as Drop Dead Beautiful and Misfortune's Daughters, one of the most celebrated television stars of the 1980s, feminist, gay icon—Joan Collins has played many roles, and has earned her place as a true icon of the last 50 years. This revelatory biography covers the many unmemorable or memorably awful movies—such as The Stud and The Bitch based on her sister Jackie's the novels, her notorious role as Alexis Carrington making her the highest paid woman on television at the time, as well as her many stage roles. But these do not begin to explain the extent of her fame—the men in her life and her marriages make headlines as well, such as her current husband, 33 years her junior. Even as she approaches 75, she remains irresistible. This revealing biography will show how she has become such a popular figure and remained a sex symbol to so many for such a long time.
