This is a great book. It has excellent map, diagrams and oral histories.
I have a dear freind who was there during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and he give it approval which is saying much.
Walter said tehre are only two errors tha he could find. One was a story about a nurse getting a Purple Heart for working hard (Walter said not true) the second error was the chart on page 113. he said the helena and Ogala was shown too far south on the wharf. Walter said they moved further during the attack and Walter had a hand in moving them. He said the Helena was on the wharf and tied up outside of it was the Ogala. Walter said a torpedo went under the Ogala, and blasted the Helena and the resulting blast tore a huge hole in the Ogala causing it to sink.
Walter took the lead in taking the lines off the Ogala and Helena, and tied the Ogala to the wharf while the Helena slipped to the south. The Ogala later capsized, thus Walter helped save the helena from possibly sinking!
Helena thus moved to the south after the bombing.

ELLERMAN LINES was formed by John Reeves Ellerman at the end of the nineteenth century. Ellerman left home at age 14, and at 24 he established J. Ellerman & Co. in London; by 1893, he had been appointed chair of a shipping company. Following the acquisition of various companies, Ellerman Lines Ltd was formed on 22 January 1902, becoming one of the greatest shipping lines in the world. Services were offered to the Mediterranean, India, South America and East and South Africa as the Ellerman group grew and grew. Ellerman Lines traded successfully throughout war and peace, heavily involved in the war effort, until the third quarter of the century, when many countries gained their independence from Britain and 1960s containerisation saw this once great shipping line close for good. Using many previously unpublished photographs illustrating the different types of vessels owned by Ellerman Lines, experienced maritime author Ian Collard turns his attention to the company's history, from its establishment in 1886 until the shipping business was bought by its management in 1985.It was then sold to the Trafalgar House conglomerate, which merged it with its ownership of the Cunard Line to form Cunard-Ellerman in 1987. In 1991 it passed to the Andrew Weir Shipping Group and in 2003 the Mediterranean, Middle East, African, Indian and Pakistan services were acquired by Hamburg Sud and the Ellerman brand was replaced by them exactly two years later.

The arrival of aerial photography came at a particularly significant moment in terms of the visual appearance of England. This selection of photographs makes use of the Aerofilms collection, acquired by English Heritage in 2007 and subsequently digitised and made available on the Britain from Above website. When Aerofilms fliers first went up in the skies in 1919, they captured a country that, with the obvious exception of some large scale structures such as aircraft hangers and munitions factories, had more or less been preserved in aspic in 1914. What we are looking at in many of the earliest photographs in this book is essentially Edwardian England, with towns and villages generally quite compact, with fields reaching almost up to the High Streets in many cases, and little sign of the sprawl that was to engulf them in the 1920s and 30s. The streets of many towns, especially the seaside resorts that provided the aerial photographers with many of their earliest subjects, have an orderly, almost pristine appearance to them, with the Victorian and Edwardian houses undisturbed by any out of place redevelopment.

The purpose of this book is to show just how radically that position changed over the ensuing half century. We trace the outward expansion of places brought about by the availability of the car: the new suburbs and ribbon development. We see how new arterial roads came into being to meet the needs of motor transport and how the centre of cities start to be rebuilt to accommodate it. We witness the growth of sprawl around road junctions on the edge of built up areas and the arrival of new types of building there to service both cars and people: the filling station, the roadhouse. We see how the car encouraged more people to go further afield for sport and pleasure: to the seaside, the races or to new forms of attractions such as the amusement park in the country. And we see how public transport changes over the period from trams to buses with the advent of new facilities such as bus stations. The scale of traffic congestion becomes apparent by the late 1930s. In addition, the impact on the landscape of large motor factories and provision for motor sport is made clear.

David Balme will be forever known as the 20-year-old hero who, on 9 May 1941, boarded a German U-boat in mid-Atlantic, and captured one of the greatest secrets of the Second World War. This capture - or 'pinch' as it was known within secret, inner circles - changed the course of the Battle of the Atlantic and shortened the war itself. Built as the London terminus of the London and Birmingham Railway in July 1837, Euston was London's first intercity railway station. Originally designed by Philip Hardwick with just two platforms under a wrought iron roof, the entrance to the station was through the world's largest Doric propylaeum, which became known as the Euston Arch.In the 1840s the station was expanded greatly and it was taken over by the London and North Western Railway. By 1923, ownership was under the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, and express trains left Euston regularly for Wales, Scotland and the major cities of England, including Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. In 1961-2, the original station was demolished, to a huge outcry, and a new modernist station built in its place. In 2007, it was announced that the station would be rebuilt once more, with an increase from 18 to 21 platforms but these plans fell by the wayside and in 2011 a new plan was announced to redevelop the existing station. Euston is one of London's busiest stations, and may eventually be the terminus of the HS2 line. John Christopher takes us on a journey through time, telling the story of Euston from 1837 to the present day.

For many years after the Second World War, the codebreaking activities of Bletchley Park and its out-stations remained secret. Only in the 1970s did the first accounts emerge and the full significance of "the most successful intelligence agency in world history" gradually become apparent. This is all the more remarkable, given the scale of operations at BP. At times, around four thousand high-grade German signals were read a day, many within 24 hours of being intercepted.
