When a local photographer was invited to examine 1,000s of David Granick's colour slides in early 2017, he knew he'd seen something special. These images capture the post-war streets of Stepney, Whitechapel, Spitalfields and beyond in the warm hues of Kodachrome film at a time when black and white photography was the norm. Acquired by Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives in the early 1980s and preserved there safely since, these photographs show an East London on the cusp of social change.

This is a great book. It has excellent map, diagrams and oral histories.
I have a dear freind who was there during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and he give it approval which is saying much.
Walter said tehre are only two errors tha he could find. One was a story about a nurse getting a Purple Heart for working hard (Walter said not true) the second error was the chart on page 113. he said the helena and Ogala was shown too far south on the wharf. Walter said they moved further during the attack and Walter had a hand in moving them. He said the Helena was on the wharf and tied up outside of it was the Ogala. Walter said a torpedo went under the Ogala, and blasted the Helena and the resulting blast tore a huge hole in the Ogala causing it to sink.
Walter took the lead in taking the lines off the Ogala and Helena, and tied the Ogala to the wharf while the Helena slipped to the south. The Ogala later capsized, thus Walter helped save the helena from possibly sinking!
Helena thus moved to the south after the bombing.

The third volume in Robert Forsythe’s series looking at Britain’s railway shipping services through their publicity. The Eastern Region was a part of British Railways and thereby connected with railway owned shipping at Tilbury, Harwich and in the Humber. The weight of much that is shown reflects this direct railway involvement and considers the heyday of the actual "Eastern Region". The wealth of material illustrated gives a flavour of travelling by railway ferry from the early twentieth century to the present day. As well as the railway ships, Robert Forsythe looks at the connecting Fred Olsen, General Steam Navigation Co., DFDS and Tor Line services too. Concentrating on the railway-owned ports of Tilbury, Harwich, Felixstowe, Immingham and Hull, the book also looks at Newcastle and Grimsby too. Earlier books in the series are To Western Scottish Waters and Irish Sea Shipping Publicised.

Anthony J Randall examines the resistance movement along the French and Belgian border during the first year of the Great War, culminating with the execution of Edith Cavell and Philippe Baucq in October 1915. There were others: Louise Thuliez, Henriette Moriame, Jacqueline Van Til, Princess Marie de Croy and Jeanne de Belleville. They all sacrificed their freedom, if not their lives. Some were from the French and Belgian aristocracy, others were simple peasants; all were patriots. Some were rewarded, others returned to obscurity: all were heroes. Georges Gaston Quien plays his part in the story. A Frenchman for whom the war was a game and for whom the consequences of his actions deserve to be his epitaph.

As the twentieth century got underway, the competition between the three greatest passenger lines in the history of the North Atlantic produced three trios of wonder ships. From the Cunard Line came the Lusitania, Mauretania and Aquitania. From the White Star Line came the Olympic, the infamous Titanic, and the Britannic. From the Hamburg-Amerika Line came the Imperator, Vaterland and Bismarck, which would later find service as Cunard's Berengaria, the U.S. Line's Leviathan, and White Star's Majestic. They were, in turn, the fastest, most powerful, largest and most luxurious ocean liners that had ever sailed that ocean. Some would find great success; others would suffer disaster. Their careers would be affected by natural elements, by mismanagement, and by the brutalities of war. Their fates were also inextricably intertwined. The Edwardian Superliners tells their story.

The incredible wartime saga of the only American submariners to survive the sinking of their ship and evade enemy capture in WWII On the night of August 13, 1944, the U.S. submarine Flier struck a mine in the Sulu Sea in the southern Philippines as it steamed along the surface. All but fifteen of the more than eighty-strong crew went down with the vessel. Of those left floating in the dark, eight survived by swimming for seventeen hours before washing ashore on an uninhabited island. The story of the Flier and its eight survivors is wholly unique in the annals of U.S. military history. Eight Survived tells the gripping story of the doomed submarine and its crew from its first patrol, during which it sank several enemy ships, to the explosion in the Sulu Sea. Drawing on interviews with the survivors and on a visit to the jungle where they washed ashore―where a cast of fascinating characters helped the U.S. sailors evade the Japanese―Douglas Campbell fully captures the combination of extraordinary courage and luck that marked one of the most heroic episodes of World War II.

When The Eighth Passenger was first published it was acclaimed as one of the most remarkable first-hand accounts of combat flying in the Second World War. Over the years the author has learned much, which for security reasons, he could not have known at the time of the book's first publication. This edition, while retaining the integrity of the original, uses this added knowledge to reappraise the events of those fearful years. Seven young men, brought together by chance, and almost literally from the four corners of the earth, wake up day after day fully aware that the odds on their seeing another sunrise are relentlessly shortening. This story of a bomber crew flying through darkness and flak over Hamburg, Essen, Cologne, Dresden and Berlin, and always accompanied by an eighth passenger - fear - makes compulsive reading. Of nearly 7,500 Lancaster bombers built, no fewer than 3,349 were lost in action - killing nearly half of the young men who flew with Bomber Command.

It was a public transport revolution. London had led the world in the development of a subterranean railway system. The first sub-surface lines, constructed by the cut-and-cover method, were operated with steam locomotives. In theory the tunnels and stations were ventilated into the outside air, but in practice they became dingy, miserable, smoke-filled spaces. As one early traveller recorded in his journal, 'I had my first taste of Hades today ...the atmosphere was a mixture of sulphur, coal dust and foul fumes'. The railway companies desperately needed to clean up their act. It was only with the arrival of exhaust-free electric traction - combined with improvements to the tunnelling shield, pioneered by Sir Marc Brunel - that the engineers were able to tunnel far deeper to create London's 'Tube' system. Graeme Gleaves traces the development of the Underground from the early years and through the introduction and development of the electrified system

A near fine copy. The book is pristine, no markings, and clean and fresh. Pictorial panel set into the blue cloth binding, and spine. The run of numbers is 3 5 7 9 8 6 4 2, and indicates a second impression. Overall, the book looks 'as new' and unread. A handsome copy. Synopsis: Britain gave railways to the world, yet its own network is the dearest (definitely) and the worst (probably) in Western Europe. Trains are deeply embedded in the national psyche and folklore-yet it is considered uncool to care about them. For Matthew Engel the railway system is the ultimate expression of Britishness. It represents all the nation's ingenuity, incompetence, nostalgia, corruption, humor, capacity for suffering, and even sexual repression. To uncover its mysteries, Engel has traveled the system from Penzance to Thurso, exploring its history and talking to people from politicians to platform staff. Along the way Engel finds the most charmingly bizarre train in Britain, the most beautiful branch line, the rudest railway man, and-after a quest lasting decades-an individual pot of strawberry jam. Eleven Minutes Late is both a polemic and a paean, and it is also very funny.

The authors of The Mary now tell the complete story of her companion, the Queen Elizabeth, the world's biggest passenger liner.

Today these two world-renowned ships operate the weekly express service across the North Atlantic—a service scheduled to start in 194o—when the Queen Elizabeth would have joined the Queen Mary. But this was not to be. Launched in that fateful Munich year of 1938, the new Queen was first destined to serve a nation at war. Before she became a luxury passenger liner, she sailed nearly soo,000 miles in six years as a troopship—surely the most expensive `troopship' ever built. The authors tell the story of her secret dash across the Atlantic when, in 1940, Churchill ordered her to be moved from the Clyde, where she was still being fitted out. It was a situation almost unparalleled in maritime history when she sailed, alone, an untried ship, across 3,000 miles of submarine-infested waters.

The war over, the British Government insisted on the demobilisation of the Queen Elizabeth so that Cunard could transform her into a resplendent luxury liner. She was to be a floating symbol to the post-war world that Britain could still make it. No wonder the reconversion was described as "a major event in the first year of peace".

The story of the Queen Elizabeth marks the end of an era in Atlantic shipping. There will never be another ship of her size and character.. But Cunard are already building a ship to replace the Queen Mary, and the authors reveal many of the secrets of the new ship. /

Reading this became an effort. I must say however I was appalled at how very cheap she was in everything. Her continued bragging about donations that never happened, even for children. ELLERMAN LINES was formed by John Reeves Ellerman at the end of the nineteenth century. Ellerman left home at age 14, and at 24 he established J. Ellerman & Co. in London; by 1893, he had been appointed chair of a shipping company. Following the acquisition of various companies, Ellerman Lines Ltd was formed on 22 January 1902, becoming one of the greatest shipping lines in the world. Services were offered to the Mediterranean, India, South America and East and South Africa as the Ellerman group grew and grew. Ellerman Lines traded successfully throughout war and peace, heavily involved in the war effort, until the third quarter of the century, when many countries gained their independence from Britain and 1960s containerisation saw this once great shipping line close for good. Using many previously unpublished photographs illustrating the different types of vessels owned by Ellerman Lines, experienced maritime author Ian Collard turns his attention to the company's history, from its establishment in 1886 until the shipping business was bought by its management in 1985.It was then sold to the Trafalgar House conglomerate, which merged it with its ownership of the Cunard Line to form Cunard-Ellerman in 1987. In 1991 it passed to the Andrew Weir Shipping Group and in 2003 the Mediterranean, Middle East, African, Indian and Pakistan services were acquired by Hamburg Sud and the Ellerman brand was replaced by them exactly two years later.

"Empire Ships of World War II" is the story of British merchant shipping during the 1939-45 war years, providing a complete record of ships built in the United Kingdom or acquired for the British flag during this period - the Empire Ships - with their details and subsequent histories. The history of each ship built is detailed by type, sublisted under the name of the shipbuilder, and historical notes are given for each shipyard. Ships requisitioned and bought, tonnage acquired from the United States by purchase, lease/lead or charter, and captured and confiscated enemy vessels are all listed separately. Background narrative sets each section into the overall context of the conflict, and the authors have included a detailed account of the use of merchant vessels as blockships in operation "Overlord". This long-awaited updating of the 1965 version of the book now includes all private buildings under contract or licence, yard notes on British builders involved and their 1935-45 warship building lists.

From Paul Kennedy, author of The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers, one of the most acclaimed history books of recent decades, Engineers of Victory is a new account of how the tide was turned against the Nazis by the Allies in the Second World War.In January 1943 Churchill and Roosevelt and the Combined Chiefs of Staff met in Casablanca to review the western Allies' war aims and strategy. They realised that to attain their ultimate aim of 'unconditional surrender' they would have to achieve some formidable objectives - win control of the Atlantic sea-lanes and command of the air over the whole of West-Central Europe, work out how to land on an enemy-held shore so that Continental Europe could be retaken, how to blunt the Nazi blitzkrieg that a successful invasion would undoubtedly provoke, and finally how to 'hop' across the islands of the Pacific to assault the Japanese mainland. Eighteen months later on, as Paul Kennedy writes, 'these operational aims were either accomplished or close to being so.'The history of the Second World War is often told as a grand narrative. The focus of this book, by contrast, is on the problem-solvers - Major-General Perry Hobart, who invented the 'funny tanks' which flattened the curve on the D-Day beaches; Flight Lieutenant Ronnie Harker 'the man who put the Merlin in the Mustang'; Captain 'Johnny' Walker, the convoy captain who worked out how to sink U-boats with a 'creeping barrage'. The result is a fresh perspective on the greatest, conflict in human history. A wonderful insight into the Engineers of Victory perfect for history enthusiasts. The arrival of aerial photography came at a particularly significant moment in terms of the visual appearance of England. This selection of photographs makes use of the Aerofilms collection, acquired by English Heritage in 2007 and subsequently digitised and made available on the Britain from Above website. When Aerofilms fliers first went up in the skies in 1919, they captured a country that, with the obvious exception of some large scale structures such as aircraft hangers and munitions factories, had more or less been preserved in aspic in 1914. What we are looking at in many of the earliest photographs in this book is essentially Edwardian England, with towns and villages generally quite compact, with fields reaching almost up to the High Streets in many cases, and little sign of the sprawl that was to engulf them in the 1920s and 30s. The streets of many towns, especially the seaside resorts that provided the aerial photographers with many of their earliest subjects, have an orderly, almost pristine appearance to them, with the Victorian and Edwardian houses undisturbed by any out of place redevelopment.

The purpose of this book is to show just how radically that position changed over the ensuing half century. We trace the outward expansion of places brought about by the availability of the car: the new suburbs and ribbon development. We see how new arterial roads came into being to meet the needs of motor transport and how the centre of cities start to be rebuilt to accommodate it. We witness the growth of sprawl around road junctions on the edge of built up areas and the arrival of new types of building there to service both cars and people: the filling station, the roadhouse. We see how the car encouraged more people to go further afield for sport and pleasure: to the seaside, the races or to new forms of attractions such as the amusement park in the country. And we see how public transport changes over the period from trams to buses with the advent of new facilities such as bus stations. The scale of traffic congestion becomes apparent by the late 1930s. In addition, the impact on the landscape of large motor factories and provision for motor sport is made clear.

Bletchley Park: the top-secret landmark of World War Two, where a group of young people were fighting to defeat Hitler, and win the war. March 1943, the Second World War hangs in the balance, and at Bletchley Park a brilliant young codebreaker is facing a double nightmare. The Germans have unaccountably changed their U-boat Enigma code, threatening a massive Allied defeat. And as suspicion grows that there may be a spy inside Bletchley, Jericho's girlfriend, the beautiful and mysterious Claire Romilly suddenly disappears.

Breaking the German Enigma codes was not only about brilliant mathematicians and professors at Bletchley Park. There is another aspect of the story which it is only now possible to tell. It takes in the exploits of spies, naval officers and ordinary British seamen who risked, and in some cases lost their lives snatching the vital Enigma codebooks from under the noses of Nazi officials and from sinking German ships and submarines.
This book will tell the whole Enigma story: the original invention and use by German forces and how it was the Poles who first cracked, and passed on to the British - the key to the German airforce Enigma. The more complicated German Navy Enigma appeared to them to be unbreakable.

David Balme will be forever known as the 20-year-old hero who, on 9 May 1941, boarded a German U-boat in mid-Atlantic, and captured one of the greatest secrets of the Second World War. This capture - or 'pinch' as it was known within secret, inner circles - changed the course of the Battle of the Atlantic and shortened the war itself. Balme was part of a team comprising officers and men of the Third Escort Group ably led by Commander Joe Baker Cresswell, also commander of HMS Bulldog, who shared the danger with other unsung heroes such as Lieutenant Commander George Dodds. Balme was tasked with taking the Bulldog's whaler and a small party to board the U-boat U-110 which had been disabled. However he was alone when initially boarding, entering and searching the U-boat. This put him in a vulnerable position while descending into the vessel - he risked being shot by any German submariner that may have remained or blown-up by a booby-trap device. Furthermore he could have drowned when Bulldog disappeared into the mists of the Atlantic to hunt another U-boat, as U-110 could have plummeted into the depths at any time. However, where others tried and failed or tragically lost their lives, Balme and his boarding party succeeded magnificently in capturing an entire Enigma machine, the essential rotors and months' worth of associated cipher material. This was an absolute gift to the code breakers at Bletchley Park who were able to read all the secret German naval signal traffic for some months and it enabled them to read virtually the whole of the traffic for the rest of the war and with little delay. The capture was kept so secret that few even on the British side knew about it - not even the Americans were told what had been achieved after they entered the war. Balme returned from the war and never spoke about the secret capture which he believed would be hidden forever. The story of the capture and ransack of U-110 is told for the first time in the words and letters of David Balme, his captain Joe Baker Cresswell, George Dodds and others who took part in the most important submarine capture of the whole war.Besides the capture of U-110, Balme enjoyed an astonishing variety of wartime experience including the Spanish Civil War, the Palestine Patrol, the sinking of HMS Courageous, the Battle of Convoy KJF3, the fight with the heavy cruiser Hipper, the Battle of Cape Spartivento, the Battle of Convoy OB318, being sunk during Operation Harpoon, the air war in the Western Desert, the high level diplomacy of Prime Minister Winston Churchill and pioneering work as a Fighter Direction Officer in the war against Japan.

Until a few decades ago, the ocean depths were almost as mysterious and inaccessible as outer space. Oceans cover two-thirds of the earth's surface with an average depth of more than two miles--yet humans had never ventured more than a few hundred feet below the waves. One of the great scientific and archaeological feats of our time has been finally to cast light on the "eternal darkness" of the deep sea. This is the story of that achievement, told by the man who has done more than any other to make it possible: Robert Ballard.

Ballard discovered the wreck of the Titanic. He led the teams that discovered hydrothermal vents and "black smokers"--cracks in the ocean floor where springs of superheated water support some of the strangest life-forms on the planet. He was a diver on the team that explored the mid-Atlantic ridge for the first time, confirming the theory of plate tectonics. Today, using a nuclear submarine from the U.S. Navy, he's exploring the ancient trade routes of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea for the remains of historic vessels and their cargo. In this book, he combines science, history, spectacular illustrations, and first-hand stories from his own expeditions in a uniquely personal account of how twentieth-century explorers have pushed back the frontiers of technology to take us into the midst of a world we could once only guess at.

Ballard begins in 1930 with William Beebe and Otis Barton, pioneers of the ocean depths who made the world's first deep-sea dives in a cramped steel sphere. He introduces us to Auguste and Jacques Piccard, whose "Bathyscaph"descended in 1960 to the lowest point on the ocean floor. He reviews the celebrated advances made by Jacques Cousteau. He describes his own major discoveries--from sea-floor spreading to black smokers--as well as his technical breakthroughs, including the development of remote-operated underwater vehicles and the revolutionary search techniques that led to the discovery and exploration of the Titanic, the Nazi battleship Bismarck, ancient trading vessels, and other great ships.

Readers will come away with a richer understanding of history, earth science, biology, and marine technology--and a new appreciation for the remarkable men and women who have explored some of the most remote and fascinating places on the planet.

Built as the London terminus of the London and Birmingham Railway in July 1837, Euston was London's first intercity railway station. Originally designed by Philip Hardwick with just two platforms under a wrought iron roof, the entrance to the station was through the world's largest Doric propylaeum, which became known as the Euston Arch.In the 1840s the station was expanded greatly and it was taken over by the London and North Western Railway. By 1923, ownership was under the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, and express trains left Euston regularly for Wales, Scotland and the major cities of England, including Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. In 1961-2, the original station was demolished, to a huge outcry, and a new modernist station built in its place. In 2007, it was announced that the station would be rebuilt once more, with an increase from 18 to 21 platforms but these plans fell by the wayside and in 2011 a new plan was announced to redevelop the existing station. Euston is one of London's busiest stations, and may eventually be the terminus of the HS2 line. John Christopher takes us on a journey through time, telling the story of Euston from 1837 to the present day.

A personal reminiscence of the halcyon days of Ocean Travel, including a voyage in 1958/59 on the Pendennis Castle of Union Castle Line.

The title and the cover picture do not really tie together. By the time that the mail passenger fleet comprised the three Union-Castle vessels shown and the two Safmarine mailships the departure time from Southampton was now Friday at One O’Clock.

For many years after the Second World War, the codebreaking activities of Bletchley Park and its out-stations remained secret. Only in the 1970s did the first accounts emerge and the full significance of "the most successful intelligence agency in world history" gradually become apparent. This is all the more remarkable, given the scale of operations at BP. At times, around four thousand high-grade German signals were read a day, many within 24 hours of being intercepted. This was achieved by "an extraordinary mixture" of people, drafted in from all walks of life, civilian and military. At its peak, perhaps 10,000 people worked at BP; but for decades no-one talked publicly about their experiences. Only in 1993 did Hinsley and Stripp's Codebreakers give details of 'the inside story of Bletchley Park'. Much, of course, remains to be told. .. from the Introduction
