National Maritime Museum "Guide to Maritime Britain” is the definitive guide to Britain's great maritime heritage. It is a region-by-region account of the maritime, history of this seafaring nation. In the company of one of Britain's leading yachting journalists circumnavigate the British Isles, exploring en route places of maritime significance. Each of the ten chapters is devoted to a particular geographical region and within that region all manner of subjects- which relate to the area's maritime past - are explored. A detailed Gazetteer section gives easy access to information. The wealth of maritime history around the British Isles will amaze both the casual tourist and the more enlightened student. National landmarks such as Nelson's great flagship, the innovative Victory and iron leviathan Warrior; the shipbuilding heritage of Belfast and the Clyde and the National Maritime museum itself are the potent symbols of the nation's maritime past. But now you can discover a regional history which boasts many fascinating components, many long forgotten. The now defunct herring fishing industry of East Anglia; the importance of Liverpool during the great waves of emigration to the New World and the infamous wreckers and smugglers that terrorized the romantic West Country coastline are just some of the topics which typify Great Britain's nautical tradition. National Maritime Museum Guide to Maritime Britain is beautifully illustrated throughout with specially commissioned photographs by Simon McBride and historic archive material from the collection of the National Maritime Museum.

For well over a hundred years all around the coast of Britain there were located a series of nautical training ships. Often surplus navy wooden walls, the ships provided a means of educating boys and young men, while preparing them for a lifetime at sea. The more famous of the schools included HMS Conway, initially on the Mersey, and then at Menai; the TS Mercury, at Hamble, Hampshire; the Mars on the Tay, at Dundee; the Vindicatrix at Sharpness Docks on the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal; the Worcester on the Thames and the Arethusa at Greenhithe.

The Arethusa, converted from a sailing vessel, lasted until 1974 before she was purchased and sailed to America to be restored as a typical sailing vessel of the late nineteenth century.

Phil Carradice tells the story of the training ships that helped keep Britain a maritime nation from their foundation to their demise as Britain's once-proud merchant marine declined in the latter years of the twentieth century.

It continues through the great era of steam making fascinating stopping points along the way, through to today's dynamic steam scene in the preservation era. The Liverpool & Manchester Railway remains the premier trunk route between the two cities and is used by the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo's "Live Steam from Lime Street" excursion programme. Begun last summer, these eight steam train excursions sold-out, departing on different dates from Liverpool Lime Street to Carlisle, Holyhead and York. Many photographs will be featured of these fine trains as they raced along the North Wales coast, pounded over the fells of the Settle & Carlisle Railway and across the Pennines to York. Also included will be news of this year's programme, which is likely to be a huge success due to services hauled by the newly-restored Britannia class steam loco Oliver Cromwell and the newly-built A1 class Tornado (planned to do a high-speed coast-to-coast run from Liverpool to Scarborough and return) and the former Edge Hill top-link loco, Duchess of Sutherland. Oliver Cromwell hauled the last British Railway's scheduled passenger train in 1968, which started and ended at Liverpool Lime Street, and Tornado is the first mainline steam loco built in Britain in 48 years. There will be interviews with National Railway Museum boss Andrew Scott (which owns Oliver Cromwell) and Mark Allatt, chairman of A1 Steam Loco Trust, builders of Tornado. We'll also go behind the scenes to see what it takes to keep these great beasts of steam in action. On the nostalgic side, there will be reminiscences by Edge Hill's entertaining retired steam loco drivers and photos of the 1950s Indian summer of steam, stretching on into the end of Britain's mainline steam in 1958. Priced at just GBP3.99, this 84-page A4 glossy special is a must buy for railway and local history enthusiasts as well as those wanting to revel in the magic of a bygone era.

The venerable Queen Elizabeth 2 has long since become a floating legend. Launched in 1967, she was for three decades considered the last of her kind, a cherished and beloved remnant from the age of the great ocean liners. So Cunard s announcement, on the eve of the new Millennium, to build a new liner for the transatlantic service, caused widespread interest. The Queen Mary 2 would not have been a true Cunarder had she not embodied a number of superlatives and when she entered service in 2004 she was the longest, widest, highest and most expensive passenger ship ever built, at once a eulogy to maritime nostalgia and the embodiment of modern technology and design. To further build on the success of these two ships Cunard commissioned the Queen Victoria, launched in December 2007. Sporting the company s classic livery black hull, white superstucture and red funnel the ship will be employed exclusively for luxury cruises from her homeport of Southampton. With his fascinating mixture of maritime history and contemporary analysis, the author describes the history of the Cunard Line, the first years in service of the Queen Mary 2, the conception, building and maiden voyage of the Queen Victoria, before saying farewell to the QE2, which will retire to Dubai as a floating hotel in November 2009. This beautiful book is both a lavish tribute to the world s best-known shipping line and an intriguing examination of the world s most famous cruise liners.

Rare Book

Created by a team of architects, historians, teachers, and students, The New York Waterfront is an unprecedented documentation of the rise and fall of the waterfront's architectural, technological, industrial, and commercial existence over the past 150 years. This densely illustrated book vividly presents and preserves the waterfront's development. Superb watercolor, ink, and pencil drawings—some specially created for this publication—as well as rare historic pictures, aerial photographs, and maps culled from a wide variety of sources and reproduced here for the first time, make this book the most comprehensive study on the subject. Newly commissioned photographs by Stanley Greenberg supplement this already rich array of images, often bringing out the melancholy beauty of the waterfront in its present derelict state.

Also seen here are many major modern sites—the Red Hook Water Pollution Control Plant, the Port Authority Grain Elevators, the Fresh Kills Landfill, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard—capturing the nameless, inhospitable tracts whose only landmarks are the rusting remains of a once vital commercial life. This illustrative material, together with a series of informative texts written by critics and scholars, reveals a complete picture of the New York waterfront through contemporary projects and visionary proposals, environmental plans and master-planning, built and unbuilt waterfront structures (pier warehouses, recreation piers, markets, and ferry terminals), in addition to a meticulous analysis of a variety of documents and records.

The New York Waterfront offers a unique perspective on waterfront building so that the lessons of the past can inform decisions about the future. This publication also inspires us to strive for an equivalent greatness when designing the urban fabric of the twenty-first century, the kind of greatness in public works that has in the past distinguished New York City.

On the morning of September 11th 2001, two hijacked jetliners crashed into the Twin Towers. Within minutes of the attack, 36 Emergency Service Unit cops of the NYPD responded to the scene. They divided into six Teams. The first five Teams entered the Towers, and the sixth Team headed for the helicopters to attempt a daring air rescue.

14 of them would not survive.

For the first time, here are the details of what the Emergency Service Unit teams did and saw as they climbed the burning Towers. Burden down with heavy equipment they searched for terrorist “sleepers,” and survivors. Then the first Tower collapsed. Fearing that a second collapse was imminent, the firefighters and the police were ordered to evacuate. Now, the countdown began. In the harrowing final minutes, the police teams encountered everything from the absurd—including, the arrest of a mysterious man in the North Tower—to terrifying close calls. As the second Tower fell, tensions flared, bonds are formed, friends are lost, and tough and street-wise cops learn the true meaning of duty and heroism.

In this book, other stories from the NYPD include the rescue of two Port Authority cops, P.O. Will Jimeno and Sgt. John McLoughlin, who were buried under the collapse of the South Tower; the first flag raising, and the nine-month search and rescue—and the recovery—at Ground Zero.

These important and powerful stories have never been told…until now.

For 175 years, passenger ships have crossed the Atlantic, linking the Old World with the New World. Between 1892 and 1954, more than 12 million immigrants passed through the port of New York. National rivalries caused ships to grow in size, speed, and a comfort that had once been unimaginable. The advent of the passenger jet in 1958 changed how people travel. New York's harbor is now quieter, and there are no longer days with six liners ready to sail to fabled European ports. Happily, one can still sail to Europe, cruise the Caribbean, or take a world cruise from Manhattan aboard a new generation of liners like the Queen Mary 2. New York's Liners captures iconic images of the great ships from the 1890s to the present day.

On the night of 14-15 April 1912 during her maiden voyage "Titanic" struck an iceberg and sank, losing most of her passengers and crew. Of the five epic films interpreting this tragic event, the docu-drama "A Night to Remember" (1958) is often regarded as the definitive version. This text examines the film's place in the continuing generation of "Titanic" mythology. He analyses the film, unravels its production history and reception, and compares it with the other "Titanic" films, notably James Cameron's recent blockbuster "Titanic".

Ninety seconds at Zeebrugge: the Herald of Free Enterprise Story. By Iain Yardley. Published by the History Press 2014. Hardback with dust jacket. In very good condition. The Herald of Free Enterprise car ferry set sail on a routine voyage to Dover in March 1987, carrying hundreds of passengers, including British army personnel, day-trippers and truck drivers. Minutes after leaving the Belgian port of Zeebrugge, the ferry began to capsize. Terrified passengers were separated from loved ones in a seething mass of humanity, in freezing cold water and had to fight for their lives. This is the minute-by-minute account of those who lived through the disaster, from the event to rescue, reunion and repatriation. The Belgian people are also remembered for the care and comfort they gave to the bewildered and grief-stricken survivors. Including plans, photographs and records considering how this disaster impacted ferry operating procedures forever, Iain Yardley's thoughtful study covers every aspect of this tragedy. Many survivors, relatives and rescue workers have contributed to make this a fitting tribute to all involved from that night to the present day.

A magnificent tribute to the illustrious and ill-fated steamship.Normandie was unquestionably the most beautiful ocean liner ever built. The world’s largest at the time, she also became the world’s fastest. Her art deco interiors were unrivaled: capacious, elegant, and chic, decorated by teams of France’s most talented artists. Yet Normandie was plagued with frustrations―never attracting more passengers than the competition and tragically ending her days in flames at New York’s Pier 88. Celebrated maritime historian John Maxtone-Graham confesses to a hypnotic fascination with Normandie. In this comprehensive volume, enriched by over 200 photographs and illustrations, he documents every aspect of the vessel’s decorative antecedents, design, construction, and service. Always articulate, entertaining, and devastatingly well informed, Maxtone-Graham has created the definitive Normandie panegyric, a comprehensive and, at times, heartbreaking account of this fabled liner. 200+ photographs and illustrations

In 1995, before leaving his much-loved home in North Yorkshire to move back to the States for a few years with his family, Bill Bryson insisted on taking one last trip around Britain, a sort of valedictory tour of the green and kindly island that had so long been his home. His aim was to take stock of the nation's public face and private parts (as it were), and to analyse what precisely it was he loved so much about a country that had produced Marmite; a military hero whose dying wish was to be kissed by a fellow named Hardy; place names like Farleigh Wallop, Titsey and Shellow Bowells; people who said 'Mustn't grumble', and 'Ooh lovely' at the sight of a cup of tea and a plate of biscuits; and Gardeners' Question Time. Notes from a Small Island was a huge number-one bestseller when it was first published, and has become the nation's most loved book about Britain, going on to sell over two million copies.

A very good book offering real stories from around the D-Day invasion in June 1944
22 March 2018
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Very good book. Over 470 pages with 32 pages of black and white illustrations and a few maps. The primary content though is the text which gives many short testimonies from the people who experienced the times around D-Day in 1944. The book is very useful for those who want an informative collection of the thoughts and comments from those who lived through that epic event. It offers short stories from a very wide range of people. Not only the troops who fought on that day but also from the children, wives, mothers and fathers who were left behind. So many history books leave these out those views which add an interesting additional perspective on the event. The text is very readable and is especially useful for anyone who wants a book with them that they can pick up for a few minutes or an hour or two because the book contains stories that typically take from 2 to 4 pages. sometimes less, sometimes more. There were numerous stories that offered thoughts and comments that I have not come across in any other book on the D-Day period. Of course because the book has so many pages its not what I would call a pocket book but it would still fit into a briefcase or smallish bag and leave space for your other items. I gave 4 stars rather than 5 because the illustrations and maps could be better and some of the stories left me wondering what else the contributor had to say about their experience. Had it been possible I would have given it 4.5 stars. I'm very pleased that I purchased it and certainly I would recommend this fascinating book to anyone with an interest in the history of that period.
